Which is not to say religion doesn't fulfil various social & psychological needs which aren't going away & we shldn't think abt this.

but that would be replacing the "magical" god for a "humane" god...our moral values tend to fail during hardships, the symbols are needed.

The biggest prob with religion, imo, is that it ~invariably entails faith-based belief, which solidifies and protects beliefs from scrutiny.

This embrace of bias is a huge impediment to the innovation of ideas. We have to be able to adjust beliefs in such an ill-understood world.

I agree with you Helen but we can't discount how easy it is for people to give transcendent authority to God. Doesn't mean it's true.

Transcendent human principles take more thought and are sometimes discounted because there is nothing divine about them.

As poor a guide to truth as authority can be, it is still a very seductive (and easy!) way to justify truth
