But we're talking about nerds, not people with self-hatred. Do nerds suffer more from this than general?

I can't agree there. I think they're more likely to do their own thing whilst extroverts feel more pressure to conform to an identity.

Absolutely. Again,I'm thinking of the engineers who joined ISIS. But I'm not sure this encapsulates nerds who are mostly passionate abt work

I think most are highly resistant to this stuff, but those few who are susceptible can be drawn in very quickly.

Look at the "lone wolf" narrative - they're loners, seemingly harmless, but suddenly they do something awful. Sound like anyone (group)?
