"Hate crime" is such a ridiculous phrase I wonder people use it with a straight face. (Is there such a thing as NON-hate violence?)

"Hate crime" is used to mean "crime with discrimination attached", but I can't see why this should be a separate legal category.

Harassing someone because because they're Asian and harassing someone because you just randomly don't like them seem to me to be equally bad

Disagree. "Hate crime" implies you would have commited that crime to ANY person of that demographic because you hate the group.

It represents an attack on an entire demographic, and is more damaging to a community than, say, an attack in a normal dispute.
