I like think that the *definition* of a good principle is that it has useful, pragmatic outcomes for society as a whole.

That's why I defend freedom of thought and expression for example: a society with it is going to be much better in the long run.

Yes but as well as defending the principle, also have to get into pragmatic considerations of how to get ppl on board, how to implement it.
