I don't think anyone is arguing that nothing done in words can ever be punished coz there is no underlying principle there.

You'd have to defend the verbal commission of crimes, doctors who break patient confidentiality, people who leak national secrets.
-
Nobody seems to be arguing for the right to do all these things & more. It really isn't what the defence of free speech is all about.
-
That is a defence of the right to hold any views at all & express them & a belief that the free exchange ideas is beneficial to society.
-
That the government shld not punish ideas, that places for talking about ideas should encourage a variety & that society progresses this way
-
The general position that freedom of expression is both a right in society & benefit to society. This often gets sidetracked.
-
Most commonly people claim that free speech supporters are trying to force private organisations to uphold free speech.
-
I'm sure you can find or two but mostly no. You couldn't have the right to express any views at all anywhere at all without chaos.
-
At work, people are mostly expected to talk about work-related matters, for example. This is not really a free speech issue.
-
It really comes down to 'Are you trying to suppress ideas in society generally &in places for discussing ideas specifically? If so, stop it'
-
In practice, it comes down to wanting to suppress certain ideas as a way of improving society & or seeing discussing them as way to do this

I consider myself a free speech absolutist. But I take speech to mean expressing ideas & opinions. "Aim, FIRE!" is not free speech.
-
And neither is "here are the nuclear codes". @ortoiseortoisehttps://twitter.com/AreoMagazine/status/882923936626782208 …

Free speech absolutism is a straw man. What's important is that beliefs and feelings don't trump rights to act and speak. @ortoiseortoise

It's the dual meaning of "Free" Left: Freedom for ALL to express without harming others Right: Freedom for ME to say anything I want
