No, it's not. People can find themselves in the centre but this is almost never a result of a philosophical commitment to 'centrism.'https://twitter.com/melonfraufrau/status/898316801708359680 …

Almost no-one's principles or moral intuitions revolve around finding the centre of any issue & believing in that.

Rather they are in the centre because their values happen to be in the country they live in. Elsewhere, they'd be somewhere else.

So, 'centrism' is not the right way to look at it. There are positive values there & ppl defined by those, not where they fall on spectrum

If I look at where I fall on Left/Right spectrum, it is just Left of centre but I am not a conciliatory, compromising, undecided person.

And its a mistake to think of people who find themselves there just on that spectrum are wishy-washy & uncommitted.

I have argued in terms of a centre in the past but I've always really been talking abt a set of principles rooted in liberalism & humanism.

Being a centrist just means that you don't find absolutely everyone around you entirely unreasonable.

But why don't you? Not because of a philosophical commitment to finding the middle point of things. Real principles in play.

Yeah. Centre is descriptive of a position relative to societal norms. It doesn't say what they are & what they mean.

Neither of us would have centrist views if we lived in Pakistan but ppl who did have centrist ones there would understand people around them

So 'centrism' has limited usefulness and we're better off discussing the range of opinions we find acceptable & what links them ethically.

Agreed. Only useful as a shorthand if understanding at outset is that you're simply willing to find merit in principled, reasoned argument.

That's what's important, yes. Reason and principles around liberalism in a broad sense.
