No, it's not. People can find themselves in the centre but this is almost never a result of a philosophical commitment to 'centrism.'https://twitter.com/melonfraufrau/status/898316801708359680 …

Rather they are in the centre because their values happen to be in the country they live in. Elsewhere, they'd be somewhere else.
-
So, 'centrism' is not the right way to look at it. There are positive values there & ppl defined by those, not where they fall on spectrum
-
If I look at where I fall on Left/Right spectrum, it is just Left of centre but I am not a conciliatory, compromising, undecided person.
-
And its a mistake to think of people who find themselves there just on that spectrum are wishy-washy & uncommitted.
-
I have argued in terms of a centre in the past but I've always really been talking abt a set of principles rooted in liberalism & humanism.
-
Which are found on the left & right but not in the extreme reaches of either.
-
Being a centrist just means that you don't find absolutely everyone around you entirely unreasonable.
-
But why don't you? Not because of a philosophical commitment to finding the middle point of things. Real principles in play.

There's plenty of people who believe being center for the sake of finding a middle point on every pol issue is de facto correct
-
Are there?
-
Oh yeah. It's people who are trying to be bipartisan for the sake of bipartisanship.
-
They have a strong commitment to avoiding extremes of Left & Right? I wonder what principles underlie that? I know what mine are.
-
Meh. The same kind of thinking exists in more than just politics. Equilibrium theories are an investor equivalent.

Those darn 3rd Way Democrats explicitly state as much, and we've the position-less policies to prove it: http://www.thirdway.org
-
I hadn't heard of them. But in the manifesto I am writing with
@GodDoesnt we talk about the drive to make a coalition of moderates using this -
And why it won't work.
-
We don't arrive at positions or ideas simply by finding the center of an issue. Likely we agree on many goals. Maybe differ somewhat on how.
-
Centrism in lieu of policies has resulted in 1000's of Dem seats + Presidency lost which means it's not working. Promote single payer & win.
-
Centrism in lieu of policies...what does that even mean? Worked on the Hill during ACA. Even w 60 Ds, votes weren't there for single payer.
-
Def don't have votes yet now either. But we should work to cover everyone. Let's start by stabilizing ACA. Not perfect but made big progress
-
No profits on necessity. There shouldn't be a greedy little man getting rich because people need to subsidize healthcare.
