OK, that's where I disagree because I don't think fascism has got "skewed." I think it's always been a completely rotten ideology.
to becoming all fired up with conspiracy-style thinking. I am watching a family member do this. Favouring Muslim bans now & escalating.

Hmm. Maybe. But it's the fear & paranoia that the ideology is appealing to (if it's beginning to appeal). That's what brings out the dark.
-
Yes but that exists on the other side too. There's a sense of existential threat there too. I think its a trait of ideologues.

Haidt talks abt an 'authoritarian button' that gets pushed if people become convinced there is an existential threathttps://www.the-american-interest.com/2016/07/10/when-and-why-nationalism-beats-globalism/ …

Interesting idea. I bought Haidt's book on your recommendation.
-
It is very good. Shows the moral foundations held by conservatives - all of them - and those held by liberals - just two/three of them.
-
I am still a liberal coz even tho I see that I'm undervaluing some moral foundations innate to humans, I think those should be undervalued.
-
And if you imagine some of those values on the conservative side getting turned way up, you can get horrible things like ethno-nationalism.
-
And equally, the ones on the liberal side - harm/care & fairness - can go into overdrive and start doing harm to stop harm.
-
These are the foundations. Sorry, I'll stop being evangelical now. http://moralfoundations.org/
-
No problem. I'm going to read the Haidt book soon. :)
