I am really trying to maintain optimism about possibility of having productive conversations with people with different views. I really am.

This is possible when we talk about ideas with a consensus about what words mean. What the hell do you do when that breaks down?

When one person says one thing and the other hears something else entirely? How is communication possible then?

I am so sick of being told I've said things I haven't & couldn't possibly be assumed to mean by comprehending the words I've used.

I am just sick of it, full stop. All the ugliness & rage & polarisation & distortion & misrepresentation & tribalism.

I think twitter makes it impossible to engage an argument in good faith. Concision is a prescription for misrepresentation and signaling

I wrote a thing on why I don't think that's true. Relevant from 'A different kind of conversation' if interested;https://conatusnews.com/twitter-productive-conversation/ …

It's really hard. Sometimes they'll say something like "well I don't mind gay marriage it's good for the economy" and I'll cling to that...

But if they say that in response to you talking about something else altogether? This is what I'm facing right now.

People are very uncomfortable with ideas that challenge their world view. Can you reintroduce your topic & break it into a smaller piece?

I'm usually pretty good at talking to people. Its something I have read & written much about. But they're just hearing something else.

Twitter is a bad medium for nuanced talk. Too fast, too short, too impersonal.

So many discussions devolve thus. Associate what u say with straw-man version, label, and dismiss because racist, libtard, snowflake etc.

Yes, but it's escalating fast & I don't think urging people to calm down & try to talk will work. So much is going on. People are panicking

It's tough, especially on Twitter. Especially with the tribalist news organizations. I think you do a pretty good job all things considered.
