I try that but then keep thinking of other essential things & so it spreads & then I end up with a huge mass of argument to impose order on
-
-
-
I get it tightly structured in the end & its better than if I didn't allow myself to include any of the things I thought of in process
-
But it's bloody inefficient & my 'cut bits' document is sometimes longer than the final essay.
-
I've probably whined this whine before but it's so annoying it's multiple-whine-worthy.
-
I'm very far from an expert, but I think the best thing to do is substantiate a narrow, specific thesis, then save the extra argument to...
-
substantiate related theses later.
-
Yeah but the problem with that is that the ideas that come up are better. I've changed direction of argument midway before coz warranted.

I struggle w/this, too. Part of it, learned from NYC adman pal Ed McCabe, is to fully think it out first. (I have to take notes to do that)
-
I always think I've done this tho - I have essay plans half the length of the essay - but in the process, something always comes up!
-
If you come up with any smart solutions, because I really struggle with organization, please tweet them (pingtweet me) if you remember.

I don't even plan it out. I fly by the seat of my pants
results vary but I rarely regret it -
(Note to self: research origin of 'flying by the seat of ones pants.' I'm suddenly curious now o.o;)

Don't worry about your first draft. The magic happens in the edit. My first drafts are legit shit.

Where's the fun in that? Was always told to outline. But, I could do a Table of Contents - No Problem. Then I figured out the joke.
-
Also, for essay stuff, I'd write a page or two, then go back and look at it to find what I was trying to say. Bob's your uncle after that.

I just do it, no planning, no drafts, no research before the fact. Professors don't seem to mind but it is very stressful haha
