Terminology is a bit of a mess. Especially when talking across the Atlantic & using the word 'liberal.'

I think a liberal is someone who believes in progress but isn't synonymous with progressive. That would be contingent.
-
Eg postmodernists have accused me repeatedly of buying into 'the myth of Enlightenment progress' & they're right. I do.
-
I think things have got a lot better & could & should get better still but by 'progress' - building on what we have & refining & polishing.
-
Not by revolution which is not progress but tearing things down & starting again. And not too different in some ways to regress.
-
But I'm not being very clear because I am essentially thinking aloud on something I'm trying to get at but am not clear on myself yet.
-
very brave to do that in public on twitter! I admire you.

Sounds right. Liberals care primarily about individualism, choice, & civil liberties, which implies a telos (one that would need conserving)

I like this interpretation. Conserving positive traditions that support a high quality of life is important to prevent regression/corruption
