If a liberal is someone who wants to progress towards certain goals & a conservative is someone who wants to conserve traditional values?

-
Then a liberal who achieves those goals would, on achieving them, shift to being someone who works to conserve them & opposing change.
-
Unless they are not someone with consistent values & goals but someone who wants to oppose tradition & advocate change no matter what.
-
Or, they're someone who doesn't think that they have somehow arrived at the end of their development. I hope to always change and improve.
-
I hope we all do. That doesn't relate to what I have said tho, does it. You don't hope to change for the sake of change, do you?
-
No. But I do look around me and seek information that challenges my positions. I hope I don't get to the point where I say, "we're done."
-
Maybe I misunderstood your point. Perhaps you mean becoming conservative in terms of preserving the incremental advancement we make. I agree

As a liberal currently fighting to conserve liberal values, I can tell you it's disheartening rather than something to look forward to.
-
I am there too. Is it disheartening to think you could win & then focus on conservation rather than progress.
-
Yes, because human mind feels & fears loss more acutely than gain. Being in a position where only negative change is possible is unappealing
-
I don't find it so.
-
Fair enough, but doesn't the thought of never having anything to gain but plenty to lose bother you?

Maybe something like? A coherent liberal is someone who is socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

As a practical rather than general answer, I think 'liberal causes' are an infinite flux. They evolve with other things (tech, etc), so...1/
-
2/ so might be some causality issue. Not sure u can have liberalism in, say, a stagnant tribal society.
-
I think conservative values have to work round changes too tho.

Eventually, if everything I wanted was implemented, I wouldn't just want more change for the sake of change, sure. If that's what you mean.

I already know where you are going and I would say yes.

As someone who has always had more lefty views I find myself agreeing with more and more right leaning people so maybe we are already there.
