Being an asshole =/= putting forth an argument that biological gender differences need to be considered in a group for discussing diversity. https://twitter.com/StevenPrice36/status/894999968355844097 …

Sorry, not abt memo but more general "free speech." I believe you wrote that firing for expressing views infringes on free speech, no?

If I expressed view that reading is stupid to every customer that came into my bookstore (not slandering or inciting violence)...

...should I not be fired? If I hired someone to man the window at my food truck and he kept telling all women customers they are inferior...

If you hired someone to work in your house and he continually expressed his view that your kids are ugly do you not fire him?

I respect your opinion and am genuinely trying to find the line here.

The line is a general support for the idea that tolerating different ideas is a good thing & that free expression of them aids progress.

That punishing people purely for wrongthink is a bad thing. Think of it less about 'all speech is acceptable everywhere.' It isn't.

A science conference could insist ppl only talk about science. That is reasonable. Rudeness & breaking confidentiality are unacceptable.

But if people ban or punish certain ideas expressed in a place for the exchange of ideas, this can be strongly criticised.

If someone expresses certain ideas in a place for doing so & is reported to her employer & fired, this is wrong (with certain exceptions)

An exception could be if someone had said they hate black people & their job involved promoting racial equality.

But if someone said they voted for Trump & work in a university or make a sexist joke & are a financial adviser? No justification for firing

My views are subject to change and also to valid criticism that they focus too much on abstract ideas and not enough on practicalities.
