I don't deny social pressure exists but think we need to promote ignoring it &asserting individuality more than accuse others of exerting it
-
-
-
'I was made to feel this & so couldn't do what I wanted to do or be who I wanted to be' is feeble & makes others responsible for ur feelings
-
Which isn't to say it doesn't happen and people don't feel daunted by social expectations & give into them.
-
But if you're a woman in the west now, you really do have the power to decide what to do with your life quite safely & with minimal censure.
-
So I'm not hugely sympathetic to 'I was made to feel unwelcome in science because a scientist wore a shirt with cartoon women on it' or...
-
'I was made to feel that I couldn't stay at home with my kids even tho my partner was happy with this coz feminists said this is bad.'
-
If those who want women to have all the choices & opportunities have a role to play now, its in pointing out we already have them and...
-
... that we can safely ignore other people having ideas about women's roles that we don't like & do what we want anyway.
-
If the people trying to pressure you into choices you don't want are your family & community, this is hard & you'll need support.
-
But mainstream society defends your right to choose your own path in life whether career or family focused or, most commonly, a bit of both.
-
Some people are telling me of truly awful experiences of being made to feel unwelcome in a job or undermined & I know this happens.
-
And that sometimes it happens on the basis of sex. But we do not have a society which exerts huge pressure on women to fit certain roles.
-
A family member of mine had a horrible work environment where she was sexually harassed & called names for not covering her head.
-
But this does not reflect a widescale social pressure where women are not welcome in the workplace.

Like no man was ever pushed to do a job he hated and compete more than he wanted. In fact, that's the sine qua non of the male sex role.

It seems like when equality of opportunity is achieved, the only thing left for a movement to do is bitch about outcomes they don't like.
