Yesterday at Nottingham Castle, we stopped to look at military uniforms over the last 500 years. I was mostly interested in how they grew.

That's a foot shorter than me! What midgets were there in olden times?
-
So much shorter! I'm 5 ft 9 & have to duck my head in Tudor doorways. Records of criminal Pluckrose men 18th century - all abt 5 ft 2
-
My goodness, we're giants!
-
Yep. Very recent. Tho well-nourished rich people were taller. Edward Longshanks considered a giant at 6 ft 2 in 13th century.

When you go into a lot of these really old houses, the ceilings tend to be quite low, so it suggests that short-arses were the norm.
-
Yep. I have to duck my head in Tudor doorways at 5 ft 9.
-
Probably food related. I read once that the German soldiers that survived Stalingrad were mainly the shortarses that could survive on less.
