How much better depends a great deal on where you're sitting, I think. You & I are obviously sitting in different places.

It's find to say things are better when people who look like you aren't being literally murdered with repercussions.

It's fine to say things are better when folks who look like you aren't worse off as a group in every statistical measure of well-being

Sorry to jump in here. I'm trying to figure out my own ideas on this debate though, and I have a couple questions:
-
Miguel you were saying civil discussion hasn't worked yet right? Are there other better strategies - or just nothing works, we're screwed?
-
Helen, your position in the article is basically that a more confrontational approach never works...am i getting that right?
-
No. I'm talking about engaging rather than ignoring or dismissing as evil.
-
Oh ok thanks. So if someone engages w an extremist but is super angry & confrontational...are you for or against?

I'd add that reasoned engagement has done more in the long run to reduce violence & injustice than anything else. Obvs does not always work.

As ever, the test of a policy is not "has it ended X?" but "is there less X than the likely counterfactual?"
-
Shutting off debate gives credence to the 'they're silencing me, I must be rattling them' argument of extremists
-
Which pulls more (not originally extremist) people into the extremist orbit. Debating also risks it, and no point debating a trickster
-
But except in exceptional circumstances where they're smarter & you'll get caught out by rhetorical trickery, debate. You'll win long-term.
