I've heard a few times recently that intersectionality is descriptive not prescriptive; an observation, not an ideology.

It amazes me that this could be claimed by anyone who has ever engaged with activists who use 'intersectional' as part of their label.

Intersectionality is not optional My fem'ism will be intersectional or it will b bullshit Fem'ism w/out intersectionality is white supremacy

The word 'intersectionality' along with associated terms 'diversity' & 'inclusion' have their own very specific political meanings now.

'Your feminism isn't intersectional' isn't just an observation. The response, 'No, I find other approaches better' won't go down well.

Im told repeatedly that the alternative to intersectionality is only caring about cis white men. 'You're not intersectional' = 'You are bad'

I'm told this explicitly & genuinely. 'Intersectionality' is seen by its adherents as synonymous with 'caring about social justice for all.'

Here, I broke down the foundational essays. Identity politics & privilege theory were present from the start. http://helenpluckroseblogs.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/extract-from-essay-of-mine-which-breaks.html …

Please do not tell me intersectionality is not political & ideological but purely observational. It never was and it certainly isn't now.

As for claiming that criticising the standards of gender studies is anti-intellectual, never has a point been missed so thoroughly.

Criticising a field for substituting ideology for evidence and rigour can hardly be described as anti-intellectual.

It is possible to apply a powerful intellect to critical theory but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be better applied to almost anything else.

I think you might be conceding ground too freely. Although semantic discussions are frowned upon, insisting on these definition is important

I'm not conceding anything. I'm saying that these terms have specific political usages. They do.

That's fair. Would this then be a time to ally with the people suggesting intersectionality is prescriptive vs those who say descriptive?

The bullying power of these is huge. As a Midwestern writer, I feel I can't write abt majority of families I know. Every town has to be L.A.
