We need to psychologically manage our fear of death and powerlessness and the fact that there is no external moral code.

I mean that there are sound ethical systems, virtue ethics is the one I have in mind, that place morality beyond merely subjective volition.

But isn't this still a human thing? An argument that makes sense to humans & can be argued to be superior but doesn't matter outside us?

Yes, sure. But maybe I've been an atheist so long I can't see why, if you have a functioning human system of thriving, you need God.

I don't think so either. I think God is the easy option which doesn't require working through the existential dread to find joy & purpose.

I don't see need for existential dread! I'm a creature who's designed to enjoy life if he has food, friendship, interesting things to think.

Excellent! Many of us go through it tho. Coming to terms with the fact that we cease to exist. If doing so as a child, its easier.

Yes, exactly! Help a child through it in the same way you would the birth of a sibling. The less introspective might not even dwell on it.
