It's not totally independent. But part of Dawkins' point was that religion didn't have to be consciously constructed.

No. Lucy invented a god just before her fourth birthday. Sort of. So easy to elaborate on it. We're such story-telling animals.

Yeah, you could imagine the basic God story started out as an imaginary friend type thing, and then it got more complex.
