In the past, I have described myself as an 'ally' to causes like anti-racism & LGBT equality but this was a mistake.https://theantioppressionnetwork.com/allyship/

"Allyship is not self-defined" it says. "Our work and our efforts must be recognized by the people we seek to ally ourselves with."
-
The clear problem here is that it fails to acknowledge that individuals within groups are ethically & politically diverse.
-
And that there will of necessity be some people whose values you can support and some you can't. Thus allyship is always self-defined.
-
Responsibility for the principles held & approaches taken remains with the ally & cannot be so easily off-loaded even if that were advisable
-
We choose to support radicals, intersectionals, liberals, conservatives etc & shouldn't pretend otherwise if those values mean anything.
-
Upholding principles is a good thing & so is being guided by members of various groups sound ideas on group-specific applications of them.
-
Upholding ur own values doesn't imply always thinking you know best in every situation. Liberal & reforming Muslims understand stuff I don't
-
But if someone claiming to be a liberal makes recommendations for approaches to a problem affecting their own group which aren't liberal...?
-
I can still evaluate this & choose to go with a better plan. I don't stop being an ally to important equality causes.Just certain approaches
