But even with stories and poetry I believe in clarity of communication. Sure there can and shd be ambiguity of meaning. But not befuddlement

Eh, it depends on the work. I enjoy a lot of postmodern-type movies, literature with confusing mind bending stories.

Exactly. For some things clarity works. For others the lack of it allows them explore different territory other work isn't always able to.

Ambiguity and lack of clarity are not exactly the same. This has multiple meanings is diff from "I suspect there is no meaning behind this."

Yes. I suspect what you call ambiguity is what Christian likes having heard Christian talk abt what he likes & getting your distinction.

For it to be art, it needs that intentional ambiguity. If its just an incoherent mess, its not art.

Ask me with literature. Then I can show the difference between a postmodern plotless novel & a novel written by someone who can't do plots.

If your point is that you just don't like art done by people with no talent, then sure. I agree.

Its the difference between successful ambiguity and failing to execute art that I'm talking about. But this is largely semantic, I suspect.

I think I'm reluctant to say something can't be art on the basis that it doesn't seem to have any real meaning or coherence.

Would it be fair to say that you don't like art where the effect is in part to cause confusion, with no underlying deeper meaning?

I've said this before, but I think the real problem is when critics become unwilling to point to emperor's nakedness.
