And whether 'upset' itself has gendered connotations. I have seen it used in the US to include a wider range of emotions than in the UK
-
I see it used to include angry as well as tearful, shaken, sad, distressed more in the US. And it is a US study.
-
But if we see the sentence 'The way s/he spoke to me really upset me', do we imagine this to be more likely to come from a man or a woman?
-
In my experience, it would be much more likely to be a woman whilst a man more likely to choose 'tougher' words. Pissed me off. Got to me.
-
I'm certainly concerned about current feminist 'victim' narratives but doubt this difference primarily a feminism-induced cultural construct
-
Which is not to say that we should promote the idea that women are less able to deal with words online & should be protected from them.
-
Women are also known to cry more & suffer from depression more. Yet men are more likely to commit suicide. Early stages of research suggest
-
that crying is a very useful tool to deal better with negative emotions. Emotional tears seem to contain different chemical make-up.

Requiring men to be better at toughing it out, while women are just more traumatized by the same phenomenon, is hardly flattering to women.
-
How much is required & how much is an innate gender difference? Do we require men not to show distress or women to amplify it?
-
To a certain extent we do but also based on natural differences formed by different effective techniques for getting desired response?

Do you mean just less likely to admit being 'upset' online?
-
Generally. Also less likely to think in terms of 'upset.'
-
From experience I think it's more likely the latter, also maybe sexualised threats are just more upsetting than violent ones?
-
Not sure. But much of it isn't threats. Just sexual & violent language.
-
True, I've experienced a bit of violent & racist abuse and almost 0 sexually abusive language, the latter I imagine could be more upsetting.
-
The most upsetting/maddening msgs I get are character slurs (bigot/misogynist etc)...
-
so maybe abuse/ harassment based on sexuality maybe more hurtful than violent ones.
-
I have said 'maybe.' Like you, I find attacks on my character to be most hurtful. Sexual insults are easy to brush off.
