I see it used to include angry as well as tearful, shaken, sad, distressed more in the US. And it is a US study.

But if we see the sentence 'The way s/he spoke to me really upset me', do we imagine this to be more likely to come from a man or a woman?

In my experience, it would be much more likely to be a woman whilst a man more likely to choose 'tougher' words. Pissed me off. Got to me.

I wonder how much of the upset is just thinking they SHOULD be upset abt this or that thing, as opposed to truly being upset.

Or men thinking they shouldn't be. Or not liking to admit that they are. Or describing the same feelings in terms of anger.

Seems it would be difficult to get absolutely true answers even if the people were open to telling the absolute truth.

Yes! Comparing the way men & women feel by comparing the words they use to express those feelings is likely to be very flawed.

eg, Great study found men more likely to address mental health problems if couched in terms of building strengths than admitting weakness.
