Then if I say 'You could make that argument. Why don't you?' they say things like 'No need to be dismissive! I'm writing to you sincerely!'

And I say 'No, I'm encouraging you to write your counterview. In an essay. With supporting evidence. Not in a paragraph to me."

U think it belongs in an essay. I can't really tell from this outline. Write the argument. 'Well if you're not open to discussion, I'll go!'

I find people very hard to understand a lot of the time. I understand ideologies & psychology underlying them quite well but outside this..?

Tbf, ideology, psychology etc., explain this behaviour quite well. You ask a question that demands an answer they can't give.

In order to maintain their believes, without answering, unwelcome behaviour will be ascribed to you. A justification for avoidance.

It's like a boomerang effect isn't it. They act uncivil & accuse you of the same behavior. Trump does this too.

But they just seem really sure of an argument. Enough to write to me & tell me I should have argued it. Then offended I suggest they do!

They're not so sure. Too much time is spent defending/protecting the "believe" with deflection. Rather than with arguments.

They seem to have arguments. Last one could have found some for PoMo being good & science having caused harm.

Well, I should've added "good" there. If sure, much more effective to write a response If sure, they expect the response to be well received

I end almost every serious twitter conversation these days with something like: That my take. I might be wrong. As might you be.
