I think of myself as having a very neutral accent. A short conversation with anyone not from London disabuses me of this notion.

My old nursing teacher tested this in London& found that patients perceived Nigerian nurses as less friendly/comforting than Jamaican ones.
-
Even when they said the same things and smiled. The difference was staccato delivery or syllables blending into each other.
-
She also found that Irish nurses were perceived as more comforting than Cockney ones despite most of the patients being Londoners.
-
I don't know how much this travels but locally, at least, tells us something about slowing down & relaxing voices when talking to people.

I'm Irish & find people often warm to me quickly simply due to my accent. Helpful in conversations where there's disagreement.
-
Yes! It just feel means to be harsh to someone with a warm Irish accent. Like kicking a puppy. XD It can be deceptive tho!
-
yup, some can also be patronizing.I find most have a good image of Ireland/the Irish & it influences their perception & reaction
-
I'm sure it can. You're all just so friendly & lovable, aren't you? No-one thinks the English are friendly & lovable.
-
That's true, but I've lived in England for several years and to be fair you're not as bad as everyone makes you out to be

To her dying day my mother was convinced she had no accent at all. To anyone from England she sounded like a female Billy Connolly
