Me: Hi! We've booked your cottage in Sherwood Forest & I am trying to work out travel... Her: Well, you're coming from London, obviously...

I think the nicest accents are West Country, Irish, Jamaican &American South. Unfortunately. I'm from Essex. Cld be worse. Cld be Birmingham
-
I like accents that are soft & warm & this prob comes from variations in my own culture. They seem friendly whilst staccato ones seem hostile
-
My old nursing teacher tested this in London& found that patients perceived Nigerian nurses as less friendly/comforting than Jamaican ones.
-
Even when they said the same things and smiled. The difference was staccato delivery or syllables blending into each other.
-
She also found that Irish nurses were perceived as more comforting than Cockney ones despite most of the patients being Londoners.
-
I don't know how much this travels but locally, at least, tells us something about slowing down & relaxing voices when talking to people.

I was recently told I have a Gallifreyan accent. I don't know what to make of that exactly but I think it's a compliment.
-
I had to look it up so cannot really help!

Well, it's a doctor who reference... and I'm a big fan of the show. I just don't know what the person thinks it means to speak like one.

It's like me and my Midwestern accent (I'm from WI). The only thing is that practically all newscasters in the are trained to sound like me.

I spoke to a Southern Baptist from Houston, TX, who was absolutely convinced she had no accent at all.

Research shows language informs brain dev, social style, etc. Suppose accents maybe the same. Hearers' experiences then inform expectations?
