I am mildly interested & pleased that the new Doctor is a woman. Probably not enough to watch it. In case you cared.

I think that's normal & healthy. It's when you don't grow out of it & continue focusing intensely on identity that we have a problem.
-
The doctor being an alien, this sex switch can work, but it's a shame they aren't a bit more creative and develop new female characters.

-
Rather that coopt existing ones. However, if they have a good story arc, I'm all for it.
-
River was a good play that hadn't been done before. They've had some good actresses in recent years but squandered though poor plot.
-
They've had excellent actresses. Missy worked very well, but her character was different to the Master. Equally evil, but in a different way
-
They'll have to do the same with the new doctor. Equally good and equally flawed and equally ruthless, but in a feminine way.
-
What we don't want, and what I believe could happen, is them making the doctor "more good" because she's a woman and critical of masculinity
-
Which is what they did in the finale of the previous season when the old white man regen into black woman "All that ego"

I am male and that the character was female didn't matter to me at all. So my anecdotal evidence seem to contradict yours.
-
Yes, it does. One of my daughter's male friends was Cinderella in their game once too. Otherwise, I found they stayed in gender tho.

I guess for a sense of morality, it's preferable when kids identify with the movie hero, regardless of their other identities.
-
My daughters always liked pretending to be female villains.
-
fighting dull male heroes of moral purity might be very rewarding :)

Not sure how much this is *actually* natural behaviour vs picking up cultural prompts. My favourite book as a child was "the worst witch"

(about a girls magical boarding school) Close 2nds were Brian Jacques Redwall, or Robin Jarvis Deptford Mice (does that make me a furry? :P)

When I was a kid I identified with Mulan because she struggled until she started solving problems with her brain and not her muscles.

My whole life has had female lead roles, Mum, Nan, Wife... It's nice when TV reflects that ;)

Maybe its that I'm Jewish and naturally, all of the best actors are Jewish!, but I've never ever ever cared that I "ID" with the leads.
-
I liked David Tennant (as did most Who fans) because he played the role in the best way. Note: I am neither Scottish nor white!
-
I can't see why people should like something more because the actors are similar to them (gender / race / sexuality).
-
The problem with female Dr is 2 fold 1) It gives off impression its done purely for PC reasons 2) Its completely changing dynamics of show.
-
Whether or not this is (or will be) true is a different matter. I wish her the best, but female lead will change the dynamics /relationships
