I've learnt that people w 'very intelligent' 'highly logical' 'polymath' 'genius IQ' in their bio often struggle with reasoned discussion.
-
-
Similar to the pedants are the people who look for loopholes in everything to deliberately misunderstand points that are quite clear.
-
R Dawkins once - "Banning women from driving is wrong!" 25 tiresome idiots - "Even if they've been convicted of drunk or dangerous driving?"
-
Pedantry & loophole-hunting are ways to avoid engaging with people's ideas & quite different to hashing out fine details & devil's advocacy.
-
I have a block policy for ppl doing this now & quite a few things which clearly show they have no intention of attempting honest discussion.
-
I might have to make a list similar to the one I have for muting ppl who seem genuinely incapable of conversation. I like lists.pic.twitter.com/YoPHnERHmd
-
Some people think blocking & muting is necessarily the same thing as setting up an echo-chamber but this misunderstands the concept.
-
In an echo chamber you surround urself with ppl who reflect your values & politics back at you, confirming your sense of your own rightness
-
Muting or blocking ppl you've found can't/won't have an honest conversation is a necessity if u don't want to waste time on them again.
-
Many of the people I've muted or blocked have shared my politics & values completely.

I (prob unsurprisingly) disagree with pedantry being a flaw depending on how it's expressed. Mere interest in minor details is certainly not
-
Making a big deal out of minor details is a social flaw though imo and I'm sure that's more like what you're referring to.
-
That was the difference between being meticulous/scrupulous and being pedantic that I was talking about.
