Uh, I got some criticism for tweeting this quote, possibly deserved as it is quite a provocative quote...https://twitter.com/christianjbdev/status/883757733694099461 …

(((Christian JB))) 🐌 added,
But FWIW, my interest in it is the idea that we don't individually have to be free of bias in order for 'the system' to find truth.
As for whether the quote endorses prejudice. I think author is saying is that free-speech always includes some truly bad ideas.
And that it's dangerous and wrong to think you can rid speech of truly bad ideas, without also sacrificing the benefits of free-speech.
Yes, I think it also means that it inspires us to think through why awful ideas are awful to argue it which helps us see what is good.
Eg, by countering sexism against women, we find examples of women being equal to men & women being better in some ways. We think & explore.
If we have bad ideas coming at us left, right & centre, we are energised, as it says, to think, evaluate, counter, concede, refute.
Well, no shortage of bad ideas here on Twitter, but I think this was written before Twitter was even a thing.
Yes, wasn't thinking of Twitter particularly. But, as he says, if we got rid of all prejudices, it'd just mean we had the same ones.
I like very bad ideas coz they make me think through the problems with them & clarify principles in my mind which apply more widely.
Just don't want them to be popular.
