We all do this all the time but ppl try to conflate the two when they don't want you to criticise a specific idea.

So we get ppl saying u must respect Islam itself to respect the right to it but absolutely not respecting other forms of social conservatism
-
Of course some wld ban all conservative ideas but more are simply highly critical of them & don't feel this denies their right to exist
-
I can respect the right to believe in islam, but I don't have to respect the believer or the religion.

I think most people who make this mistake are genuine. I think they simply haven't thought about it much.
-
At first, yes. After I've explained it several times, no. They have the capability to understand.
-
I think it's possible that twitter communication might be partly responsible. The successes I've had were in real life conversations.
-
I don't. I find it works better & have just written a thing about that.

Sadly there are ppl who don't understand the difference,no matter how much you break it down or simplify it:(

Don't think anything would qualify as disrespecting one's "right to an idea". Rights to believe contain no claims, powers or immunities.
-
Rights to believe, feel and want are neither moral nor legal rights, so only way I imagine we could respect them is simply to ignore them?
-
Allocating different legal and moral rights to individuals based on whatever arbitrary beliefs they happen to hold collapses into relativism

You are giving people 2 much credit. Some just don't have the mental faculties to understand the difference, even educated ones.
