Do you think muting people is wrong? I do so quite a lot if ppl are deliberately missing the point or I forget & try talking to them again.

Not at all, but in this case you didn't have to. You could have just ask him to stop. We have this type of talks all the time.

Yes definitely, Twitter can be hard to express what he's trying to say, he's a personal friend so I've spoken with him many times.
