Dear god. Historical look at what patriarchy is & isn't is coming in at 4,500 words. Even the most tolerant editor will balk at this.
I think the environment - conflict/competition or peace - can make either male or female traits more necessary for survival.
-
-
Because the need to survive is primary followed by the need to procreate in evolutionary terms.
-
So chimps are patriarchal because they have to compete with other groups & survival depends on fighters - males.
-
And bonobos are matriarchal coz they don't have to compete for resources & so the survival of genes depends on getting a female to mate.
-
Which is hugely oversimplistic but also borne out by evo psych on how we attitudes become more socially conservative when existential threat
-
Gender equality, like liberalism generally, may be a result of peace & security to some extent. But I don't know enough.
-
Basing this on a few popular essays and studies. I'd need to research a lot more before writing an essay on it.

Yes I agree - I try to persuade students to think about behavioural ecology for human societies (not all of them like this!).
-
Though they are surprised their English lecturer knows so much about (say) spotted hyenas, and the violence, 'masculinity' of their females.
