So much comes down to the individual's psychology when it comes to balances of kindness, empathy, loyalty, jealousy, aggression etc.

For intrasexual competition to turn really nasty, I think it takes a specific situation and/or a nasty personality and/or nasty ideology.

A normally kind person & good friend could get very nasty if someone is flirting with the person he/she is romantically interested in

The habitual same-sex bully is surely going to have personal traits or personal experiences leading them to take pleasure in that.

In adolescence exacerbated by hormones & insecurity but I'll never quite trust someone who enjoyed cruelty as a teenager.

Unless they are thoroughly ashamed of it as an adult & give much evidence of empathy & kindness.

And ideology produces hostility to an outgroup & particular vitriol for those members of an in-group threatening it with heresy.

The honest word is "coopetition". It's like Venus and Serena at Wimbledon. The degree of cooperation/competition is context-dependent.

One context that favours competition is socio-political interactions between women with diff strategies, as in PhD vs. breast enlargement.

Another context: the issue of prostitution, in which you have a middle-class women's cartel coming down hard on women monetizing sexuality.
