I truly despise that term. It suggests masculinity is itself bad, too much = toxic. As mom of 2 boys, I must object. It's like "feminazi".

I'm on the fence abt it. I think there are some attitudes associated w manliness when taken 2 excess are toxic 2 their holders or others.

Helen has convinced me 'toxic masculinity' is not a gd way 2 describe this phenomenon. But now I'm not sure what to call it.

Which is a problem. I don't know either but do think it better to address the behaviour than gender it. eg, Boorishness when it is.

But sometimes it's internalised societal expectations or views abt manliness (I honestly believe this contributed 2 a male friend's suicide)

Yes, I get that but culture gives us ways to mitigate these things or to make them worse. I think attempts to mitigate have been poor.

Mostly consists of nagging men to talk about feelings which can just be experienced as an additional burden.

And when men do talk about our feelings, we're told to "man up" or "grow a pair". This has happened to me.

I think it gets entangled with feelings tho. Needs & feelings get quickly conflated. I think feelings can be expressed indirectly. Needs no.

Agreed. We might measure the success of a society by how well it mitigates these artifacts of our evolution. (if I can put it that way)
