No, no. I somehow undermine history by saying society was patriarchal but isn't any more. https://twitter.com/okayultra/status/877465019046166528 …

I'm not the heir of oppressed women & men not the heirs of oppressive men even if it were that straightforward & inherited guilt reasonable
-
But this argument will fail to satisfy people who see history as a social justice problem needing to be addressed by contemporary society.
-
They've said things like 'you can't abuse & exploit people for centuries & then say 'OK, we'll stop now' & expect them to just get over it.'
-
Which I think shows very clearly the problem with elevating group identity way above shared humanity & individuality.
-
But they genuinely feel this way & on a deep, emotional & moral level so we need to engage with that as well as point out it's unreasonable

I think it was Iris Marion Young who said historical injustices = bad justification for "affirmative action" policies...
-
... much better to have policies that address current injustices/discrimination.

So evidence of this sort http://scholar.google.com/scholar?cluster=14189865483845884128&hl=en&oi=scholarr … would be more relevant than historical injustices suffered by one's ancestors...

Of course, compensation for real crimes still matters. "I legitimately bought this art the nazis stole from you(r family)" isn't convincing.

"You are trying to kidnap what I have rightfully stolen" is always good for a laugh...http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4cxcsa
