I'm afraid I don't have well-developed ideas on the subject of economics. I'm much more about ideology & ethics.
No. I think that's a very serious issue & there needs to be stronger regulations & harsher penalties for breaking them.

I wouldn't have said that we needed to fix this if I didn't think it needed fixing.

If we only produced and ate "happy meat," it would become much scarcer & more expensive. People might realize cheap meat depends on cruelty.
-
Yes, exactly! Meat would become a delicacy. Provision for alternative sources of cheap protein for poorer people would need to be made
-
But that's the thing. We have this situation already today. We do have alternative (& cheap) sources of protein. So why breed more animals?
-
We're back to the original problem. Do I take it you are in favour of farm animals not getting to live at all?
-
I think we should stop breeding farm animals ASAP. The living? 1) returned to wild 2) taken as pets & if not 1 or 2, then 3) killed humanely
-
Right. Would this reduce animal death and suffering at all or would it just absolve ourselves of responsibility for it and for them?
-
We can't be too bluntly utilitarian. We don't have many obligations to wild animals. Liberating them absolves us of responsibility, I'd say.
