@HPluckrose As a classical liberal, what are your thoughts on social democracy / the welfare & regulatory state? Are they compatible w/ CL?
We can & must insist that farm animals are not abused tho. Stronger penalties for those who do.

Do you think animals raised for food in Europe/the UK are treated well? In the US, their lives are far from ideal or idyllic.
-
No. I think that's a very serious issue & there needs to be stronger regulations & harsher penalties for breaking them.
-
I wouldn't have said that we needed to fix this if I didn't think it needed fixing.
-
If we only produced and ate "happy meat," it would become much scarcer & more expensive. People might realize cheap meat depends on cruelty.
-
Yes, exactly! Meat would become a delicacy. Provision for alternative sources of cheap protein for poorer people would need to be made
-
But that's the thing. We have this situation already today. We do have alternative (& cheap) sources of protein. So why breed more animals?
-
We're back to the original problem. Do I take it you are in favour of farm animals not getting to live at all?
-
I think we should stop breeding farm animals ASAP. The living? 1) returned to wild 2) taken as pets & if not 1 or 2, then 3) killed humanely

What would you prefer if you were a pig? Never be born. Have a short happy life & die painlessly. Live & die like a wild animal w/out care?
-
I'm not arguing for rescuing wild animals (right: priorities). If we breed animals, though, we should treat them as we would treat pets.
-
So farmers wouldn't breed them. What would happen? We'd let those alive now live out their lives & then no more pigs, cows, chickens?
-
Idk what the ethically optimal solution is. We've bred billions of lives for the sake of ending them prematurely. Farmers created this mess.
-
We faced an analogous situation w/ slavery. Southerners argued there'd be chaos if slavery ended. But the solution wasn't to retain slavery.
-
Not really. Slaves were humans. They could contribute to a society & pay for their own food & medical care. Didn't need caring for.
-
I'm way of the analogy, but it has merits. Many freed slaves couldn't care for themselves. Their integration was rough even w/ federal help.
-
They had that potential. Even if they never recovered from the trauma enough to lead a functional life, their children could do so.
