Motte and Bailey is just a sophisticated strawman fallacy. I teach my 101 students that one, it's so easy. Come at me bro.

All societies were and are Patriarchies. They seem to be the only ones stable enough to last long enough to leave a trace....
-
They were in my period. They haven't been for some time. If you're going by the normal definition of men having legal power over women.
-
that isn't the "normal definition"
-
For a society, it is. That is what it means. Power is allocated only to men & they have power over women.
-
I'd love to see an article discussing historical and modern usages of the term "patriarchy" - I think there's a lack of clarity here.
-
You could be in luck. Do you hear this
@MalharMali? (It's one of four essays I have on the go right now for Areo. I favour that one.) -
I keep planning out essays & not writing them & need telling 'We want that 1 & by the end of the week.'
-
I have a bit of an idea for something, but I need to make time to work on it.

You don't "have to", you should always argue your experience and never cow to authority.
-
I do have to! The one essay in which I said sexual selection was real got a terrible grade for being problematic.
-
And then the atmosphere was awful & then I got turned down for a job despite being the best qualified.
-
I went into medieval manuscripts coz its still OK to be empirical there & you don't need to go on abt constructivism

I think patriarchy is evident and gender is on a spectrum of construction where some are more fluid and others more fixed.
-
OK, well you can argue for that & it'd be interesting to see evidence of a society which still reserves power for men.
-
And the other completely depends on how you define gender - if you include all psychological and cognitive differences, no.

Despite all the evidence to the contrary. Presenting it is problematic. Hence complaints. We want academia back.
-
I don't think it was taken from you. I think in demonizing it various groups have abandoned it and with it the debate.
-
Well, we didn't criticise it before it went nuts. I've not abandoned the debate tho. Just have to do it outside to get published anywhere.
-
I guess I haven't seen it as going nuts. Even were I to concede it has, I think my view of what should come next is different from the OPs.
