Eg, if someone thinks women are less capable than men or that homosexuality is wrong but advocates fully equal rights & opportunities.

I can even respect this person on a detached level for upholding liberal principles which go against their beliefs. Its all we can ask.

I think religion is awful but defend religious freedom in the same way (tho obv I think I have much better justification)

I could neither accept or respect such a person on a personal level. Sometimes I think people confuse these two levels.

Or they confuse respecting a person's commitment to subordinating their personal belief to universal liberalism for respecting the belief.

But we cld respect a religious conservative for supporting same sex marriage coz he feels his beliefs shld only apply to him on 1 level 1/2

I don't think this is inconsistent. It depends so much on what we feel we have a right to expect from people in different arenas.
