It feels to me that committing an idea to text is a commitment to that idea in a way that spoken words are not.

Not that we shouldn't try to be honest in speech just as much but it's more exploratory coz it's in real time with my thoughts.

But committing it to writing in your own time involves an extra layer of responsibility to double-check your processes.

Whereas so much of spontaneous speech is intuitive & hasn't undergone that process. That can happen later when it's too late & that's awful.

Written speech is also subject to later revision but then u can say 'I've changed my mind from this considered position to this because...

Which is much better than 'Yeah, I hadn't really thought that through.'

I prefer f2f so I can judge if someone is being honest but there's no reason to think someone writing is less or more honest.
