I have found myself understanding less of the other's argument & expressing my own less well in real-time speech than if time to reflect.

In my opinion that's because writing lends unearned confidence (generally not in you)

I don't think so. I encounter more defensiveness in real-time speech where you don't have time to assess charitably & respond encouragingly
