Its the null hypothesis. We simply have to do this. Can't believe in 30,000 gods & even more mythical beings & claims in case they are true.

We have to be selective and look at any claims which have enough evidence to be serious propositions.

You need to apply the same principle to every claim. Unless there is evidence for it, don't believe it, keep options open.
