I think so, yes. Built on top of natural tendencies for boys to show off & girls to be dramatic & possibly an instinctive fear we all have.

Unlike snakes, that fear doesn't appear to be universal. I have to overcome fear to pick up a snake, not so a spider.

Vertigo and snakes is almost universals. Other primates are also afraid of snakes, even if they see them for the first time.
