I'm not sure about that. Wouldn't make much sense for 1 sex to develop an instinctive fear. If we have 1 maybe boys more likely to resist it

I learnt to be afraid of spiders coz other girls were. My mother wasn't & I was fine til then. Also hid my fear from my daughter & it worked

Wow. You're claiming your fear of spiders is a cultural construct?

I think so, yes. Built on top of natural tendencies for boys to show off & girls to be dramatic & possibly an instinctive fear we all have.

Unlike snakes, that fear doesn't appear to be universal. I have to overcome fear to pick up a snake, not so a spider.

Not sure Helen would agree that fear of snakes is universal, but I'm sure she'll let us know.

There are always exceptions but, like vertigo, it's an innate trait.

It's kinda interesting cos it would seem like it should be an innate trait and yet many people don't suffer from these phobias.

Vertigo and snakes is almost universals. Other primates are also afraid of snakes, even if they see them for the first time.

Isn't it interesting though that we can to a large extent overcome those fears if we decide that there's no reasonable cause to be afraid.

I don't remember being afraid of snakes. Wanted to hold them as soon as I saw them. Got 1 as soon as I left home
