Stop telling me spiders are harmless & useful. My fear of them is not a rational one. It is impervious to facts & reasoning.

I didn't. And I was determined Lucy wouldn't so I used to pretend to be pleased to see spiders & ask her if she'd like to pick it up.

If you say 'Shall I put the spider out or would you like to do it' to a three year old, she says 'me, me me!' No idea of being afraid.

Unlike snakes, that fear doesn't appear to be universal. I have to overcome fear to pick up a snake, not so a spider.

Not sure Helen would agree that fear of snakes is universal, but I'm sure she'll let us know.

Not in my case, certainly. I have been nervous when handling large aggressive snakes but this is rational.

Not a visceral revulsion & panic like I feel with spiders, dead bodies & fungi.

I think you're right.My daughter is terrified of all creepy crawlies despite my protestations and my catch and release policy.

I agree. I can remember a time I wasn't bothered about picking up spiders, but now I am. I'll trap them in a jar, but not touch. Def learnt.
