It seems to be instinctive in women. Both my wife and daughter are terrified of them. Myself and my son, not at all.

I'm not sure about that. Wouldn't make much sense for 1 sex to develop an instinctive fear. If we have 1 maybe boys more likely to resist it
-
I learnt to be afraid of spiders coz other girls were. My mother wasn't & I was fine til then. Also hid my fear from my daughter & it worked
-
Wow. You're claiming your fear of spiders is a cultural construct?
-
I think so, yes. Built on top of natural tendencies for boys to show off & girls to be dramatic & possibly an instinctive fear we all have.
-
I don't suffer from it at all. Actually one of the few fears I don't suffer from!
-
I didn't. And I was determined Lucy wouldn't so I used to pretend to be pleased to see spiders & ask her if she'd like to pick it up.
-
If you say 'Shall I put the spider out or would you like to do it' to a three year old, she says 'me, me me!' No idea of being afraid.

I get irrational fears & phobias!

I'm terrified of the dark - still prefer to sleep with a night light on if I can! :)

Spiders are a "protected" species in Judaism because they saved David's (before King) life. Annoying cos I hate the f**kers. Same with dogs!
-
True story bro. Well ... Maybe a true story. Dogs are protected for some Exodus reason. I think God just hates me.

True. I only mention it because I have an irrational fear of INSECTS, and while spiders also squick me out, "the enemy of my enemy .... "

Don't read "Children of Time": sci fi dystopia in which a terraformed world is accidentally seeded w giant arachnids instead of monkeys.
-
Should those of us without arachnophobia read it?
-
I enjoyed it a lot.
