Why did women went to nunnery, generally speaking ? Was it punishment or a career choice ?

Neither usually. They were mostly women of wealthy family. Various. Cld be widows who didn't want to marry again or women who couldn't marry
-
& family didn't know what to do with them & wanted them monitored. Cld be a vocation but usually only if family agreed.
-
Or family could give a lot of money & the woman to the nunnery in a form of penance or to please God.

Interesting, thank you. (:

Which crude people asked for pictures of nuns having lesbian sex?! Disgusting and shameful!
-
I actually had a look at the time you posted that and the time that I messaged you. It wasn't me that you were referring to!!
-
It was. :-p

Oh ... The time changed. I almost thought you were psychic, as if you pre-empted it. I thought you might have been the Messiah. Never mind

My paternal grandmother was a nun for a short while to escape an arranged marriage. She said some nuns did try that. Horrified she was.
-
My aunt was a nun. She entered the convent as an alternative to being sent to a psychiatric hospital. Weird, but true.
-
It didn't work. After a few months, she was in hospital. She was too bonkers, even by Catholic standards.

Awwww
