I don't characterise people by the colour of their skin. Neither should you.

....I don't think I do.
-
Did I miss the very purpose of your poll? Which set out to ask people, defined by their colour ...
-
Not to characterise but to ask if they approve a term. Like asking a female person 'woman or lady?' Says nothing about character.
-
Or do you feel that even acknowledging someone's race (and gender?) in any context is a problem?

Yes, of course, but when you need to describe race, is there a better term?

Yes. I think PoC is used when it's necessary of talk abt all non-White ppl in relation to racism but does tend to collectivise.

Christ, no. It's an excruciating euphemism that implies there's something wrong with being black.
-
I think on Twitter, it's easier than saying 'black, Asian, Middle Eastern or Hispanic' but I fear it is seen as ideologically loaded.

I'm 1/2 Indian, but I don't consider myself a 'POC'. For myself, I prefer the term 'half-caste'. Here's why:https://twitter.com/ConatusNews/status/862373616373170182 …

This was my point. That PoC in America has come to include any nonwhite person. Arabs, Indians, Latino, etc.
-
And these folks don't find their skin color to be the paramount factor in determining their identity.
-
I find the situation to be diff for black Americans. There are historical and sociological reasons as to why their experience is unique.
-
It's not accurate to refer to them as African-American. In fact, it causes confusion in the American vernacular.
-
Consider a Nigerian immigrant and a 7th generation black American. The difference is significant. And neither group identifies w each other
-
Yes, I'm sure you're right.
-
Interesting. I don't think you have ever exhibited such reticence!
Must have been something I said. Or perhaps the topic itself? - 5 more replies
