Often ppl want to argue with a general attitude they think I have so I get v vague accusations & assertions of things I don't disagree with

Asking them to state very clearly the point of disagreement they think we have usually reveals it doesn't exist or makes them go away.

I think we're all susceptible to this. Getting an impression of someone's attitude & arguing with that rather than what they say.

But it's very frustrating & also quite upsetting to have people constantly responding negatively but vaguely to attitudes you don't have.

It's less that I expect them to do that & more that if they don't, I will know much sooner that the conversation is pointless.
