Breaking loyality is a personnal problem, the consequences are not. If she never knows and they don't care, nobody's hurt really.

for him too. If one of my friend was abusive to his wife I wouldn't feel the need to maintain that loyalty.

Yes, if he was being abused by his wife, he'd owe no loyalty to his wife. He's not tho so surely still does.
